The Tivoli Concert Hall
The Tivoli Concert Hall, which was designed by the architects Hans Hansen and Hans Hansen and built in 1956, was one of the largest and the most current concert hall in Europe of the time. After 10 months of building and restoration in 2005, which had costed about 125 million DKK, by the architects of 3XN.
One of the very interesting extensions of the restoration is a new Tropical Aquarium, which is Europe’s biggest aquarium of salt water containing about 1600 tropical fish.
The priority of the restoration was to improve the circumstances of Concert Hall for visitors, which includes that the public areas had been extended about to 1300 sqm. By the way the basement floor was rebuilded and was turned into an Aquarium Foyer, which is Europe’s longest salt water aquarium. In addition to that the basement level has cloakrooms and toilets. Unless an other private event is taking place, all of the visitors of Tiroli Concert Hall are welcomed to visit the Aquarium even when there is no concerts held.
The Rotunda is a new built foyer next to the old building, which is a circular glass building serving as entrance. It has one cafe and two bars and a nice view of Tivoli, a nice way to welcome visitors. In the middle of the building there are aliminium strips that reflects the light so that the light, which changes colour, beams out. It has an area of 700 sqm.
While the building was being restorated, disabled people were considered, as they were not thought as the visitor back in 1960’s, by building some new lifts and toilets for disabled visitors.
The hall itself has been kept mostly untouched except that the surfaces have been livened up and the seats have been changed. About 2 meters below the stage a new place for the orchestra that can host up to 80 musicians has been added.
The office building that used to belong to the Concert Hall, has been rebuilt as a ne glass building, which hosts the Wagamama Restaurant. The building has also canteen for staff and some meeting rooms.
Finally it is obvious that a concert experience in the Tivoli Concert Hall would be totally different, considering the perfect acoustic condition of the Hall too, and exciting.
