Molecular Bed designed by Animi Causa

Animi Causa is an Israeli design manufacturer based in Tel Aviv. They produce a number of modern furniture pieces that includes the ‘feel’ seating system. The piece is made from interconnected softballs that can be arranged in a variety of different seating and lying positions. They also produce the chocolate coasters, but don’t worry they don’t melt! 40 in 4 chair, 1963

Comfortable and compact, David Rowland’s 40 in 4 chair was designed with such close engineering tolerances that, as its name implies, forty could be stacked in a four-foot-high space (at a 45-degree angle on a special trolley). Conceived to provide flexible seating for public spaces and compact storage, the slender, lightweight, wire-rod chair won a grand prize as the best single object at the XIII Triennale in Milan in 1964, the year it was first produced. It has since become extensively adapted for domestic as well as institutional use. (more…)

The Fungus Chair is an organic architectural object. It is neither public furniture nor sculpture, but occupies a place between. The chair represents a basic organic form that can be repeated endlessly, creating infinite combinations. This toddler bed is a fine piece of woodworking. Like much of Argington’s catalogue, its elegant simplicity is reminiscent of Arts and Crafts design, with subtle details and flourishes that add character to the piece. This bed is intended for use from 18 months. Being low to the ground (20 cm/8 in.), and with detachable side rails In matching wood, the bed is safe for children who have outgrown the cot but are not yet ready for a ‘big’ bed. World champion yachtsman Loick Peyron was an inspired choice for someone to design a product for Habitat’s VIP for Kids range. The bed recalls the compact space and efficiency, and the fabric and framework, of sailboat design to create a bed that is both functional and wonderfully imaginative. Peyron says he wanted to ‘pack together’ some of his dreams as a young boy in the design, Tike climbing to the top of Robinson Crusoe’s hill; or looking at the stars through the window of my rocket.’

Charles Rennie Mackintosh

The work of the Glaswegian architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh made a significant contribution to British design in the 20th century. With Herbert MacNair and the sisters Frances and Margaret Macdonald, all fellow students at the Glasgow School of Art, he formed the ‘Glasgow Four’. (more…)
