Mosque of Masjid-i-Jami
The Masjid-i-Jami – Friday Mosque – in Heart is a stunning building with a long and checkered history. Its foundations were laid in the 10th century at a four way intersection close to the city centre.
It was rebuilt in 1200 at the decree of the Ghurid ruler Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad. Within a century, Heart was invaded by the Mongols, and the mosque was devastated by fire and an earthquake. The exterior was refurbished by the Timurid ruler Shah Rukh who governed Heart from 1397 to 1447.
There are now five entrances along the north and east walls, including a portal from the original mosque. Richly decorated tilework in geometric and floral designs in the Timurid style cover the entire building.
